It’s Supposed to be Fun

I understand that football fans like or even love their respective clubs. I don’t understand that this also includes hatred of other football clubs. Often, it seems, the fans hate the other fans more than the actual players. ”Death to all enemies” and “Destroy your enemies” are among the less revolting slogans I have found. Hatred is often not limited to stickers and graffiti but the hostility might lead to actual violence between the groups.

This is, unfortunately, not just a German phenomenon. I found the sticker below in the North of England.

FOWC with Fandango: Hostility

    1. My husband volunteered to be the referee for matches when our sons played. This was a small league, made up completely of expats living in the area in Saudi Arabia. 6 teams, a very small community, the children came from 3 different schools, i.e. they mostly knew each other. The children were fine, some a bit too competitive but generally no problem. More than once I had to have the motor running for my husband to disappear immediately after a match to get away from – the mothers of the losing team. These mothers were all one particular nationality but in the end that is not important. It was ridiculous because there was nothing riding on these matches except the children’s fun! (NB: It was Saudi Arabia, I wasn’t allowed to drive a car but …)

    1. In Germany, too. When I lived in Munich my then boyfriend (now husband) came to visit and his hometeam played Bayern Munich. We went to the game but since we didn’t have visitors’ tickets we sat in the Bayern Munich section. We were very quiet.
