The Bridges of Heidelberg

This is the river Neckar in Heidelberg as seen from the East. The first bridge, the stark metal construction is the bridge on top of the lock which regulates the different levels of water for boats and ships. It’s wide enough for cars but it’s closed to the public, accessible only for pedestrians. The second bridge is the Old Bridge which leads to the old part of town, below the Heidelberg castle. These days it is also walkway only. The third bridge is the newest bridge in Heidelberg; the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, named after the first West German president. It is also the most central one and there were bridges in this vicinity dating back to the Romans. The last one, the Ernst-Walz-Brücke, named after a mayor of Heidelberg, also carries cars and trams.
