The children dress up to watch the parade (most of the adults do, too) and the bring a bag.

Because of the Kamelle, of course. The groups in the parade throw sweets to the watchers. The more you shout “Helau”, the more they throw.

They used to throw mostly soft caramel sweets and boiled sweets but these days they throw slightly healthier bags of snacks, like little pretzels and popcorn. One group actually threw cleaning sponges (ours is not to ask why).

Carnival parades are not only for youngsters, though. There are a lot of old bags as well.

I’m not excluding yours truly from this description.

The children get sweets. The adults get beer, or wine, or bubbly, or shots. What’s not to like? (PS: Totally unfair to people like me – the designated driver.)
