Mein Freund, der Baum

The above title is a fairly well-known German song (or at least, it’s well known amongst people my age) from a singer called Alexandra: My friend, the tree, is dead. It tells the story of the friendship of a woman who comes back to her childhood haunts to find the tree with whom she shared many memories cut down. Sixties stuff, in many regards.

This is the tree standing in front of the next house down the street. It’s bare. It looked like this not even a month ago.

And then – this:

I don’t know why it was cut down. We woke up one morning, about three weeks ago, to the sound of an electric saw and this is what I saw later that morning.

Here is a photo from three years ago in February – not bare. Maybe that was the reason for the cull.

The tree wasn’t my friend but an acquaintance. I will miss it nevertheless and feel its absence.

    1. The wood looks pretty healthy but the fact that it was bare (and three years ago, also in February, it was not) suggests that maybe it was diseased. And as you say – very close to the house.

  1. I suspect it may have some disease and it is very close to the house. Maybe the roots were getting into the houses foundations.
I also miss trees when the are cut down and the surprise when you see the bare space 🥹
