The carpenter who built this church spire blamed his construction fault on the devil. It worked. People don’t remember his name and his error about wood moving after construction. What they do remember is the legend that the devil corkskrewed the tower in a fit of rage because the people of Mayen had built a church instead of an inn with a dance floor.

According to the legend the devil supplied the stones for the church when he still thought it was going to be a dancehall. So he felt duped.
