Thanks to its ruined castle (thank you, France!) Heidelberg has been a tourist attraction for several hundreds of years. It became particularly popular during the Romantic era and many poets used it as inspiration for their writings. Since then it has never been unpopular and today tourists are bussed in and swarm through the old part of town and up the hill to the castle. If locals want to visit or need to go there (there are still non-tourist shops and offices in the area) they know better than to go at lunchtime or later. In the seventies it was mainly US American tourists visiting, then came the Japanese, in the 2000s it was Russian groups and now mostly Chinese. Of course, there are always groups from all over the world.

The title is a students’ song about Heidelberg: Old Heidelberg, you are so fair.

A great idea to focus on just one attraction. It’s no fun when something becomes overrun as a must-see.

By now, Heidelberg is used to it, one should think — not so, they are having once again big discussions about a more strictly enforced curfew in the old part of town. While I understand the need for quiet in the early hours of the morning by now I think there aren’t any people living there who have grown up there but people who moved in later in life into this neighbourhood and they knew what they were getting. On the other hand, having people actually living in the area makes for a different neighbourhood.

Yes, tourism wakes changes not always easy to deal with well for everyone concerned.

I went 40ish years ago, and have very little recollection of the place….

Hit the Altstadt, did you? The student pubs might obliterate all memories … 😉
