In Germany the different 16 states have different times when to start school. This is to avoid one huge traffic jam at the beginning of the hols and splitting them up in lots of different ones. The holiday times rotate, except for Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg who have a privileged status (it’s traditional: they claimed that the kids were needed on their parents’ farms in August and early September 🙄 ).
For first day of school in Germany, look here: https://picturesimperfectblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=63982&action=edit&calypsoify=1
Short version: German children get a cone full of sweets on their first day of school, presumably to fool them about things to come.
You should tell us about it! It includes big cones of knick-knacks and sweets doesn’t it? But school … in August?

Ach! Sadly, your link comes up from an edited page, and it won’t let me look as I have no editing rights, of course …
