Five Words, one Theme

When I saw Paula’s words for August I immediately had a theme in my mind. Saint James’ Way has become very popular in the last decade amongst christian and worldly pilgrims, particularly the last stage in Spain. But many routes lead to this last stretch leading to Santiago de Compostela. However, once one starts looking the shell, the emblem of this way, can be found in many places all over Europe. Of course, before trains and planes, pilgrims had to start somewhere.

The front portal of the catholic church St Jacobus in Rüdesheim am Rhein reminds the pilgrims to lead a god-fearing life when on trail.

The transience lies in the nature of a pilgrimage, even if the destination is clear.

This pilgrim in the town of Laudenbach is angular in his built, more so because of his satchel and sleeping mat.

A hat with a broad rim seems like another important part of the apparel, providing protection from rain and sun but also casting head and face in shadow negating the individual person.

The pilgrims passed many churches on their way, some with tall spires like the cathedral in Speyer towering over the people on the trail.
