What colours do you usually see?

My Mum had the red/rusty coloured one and the plant that was in the court house garden was the same.
They are an old species that was planted in the 60’s a lot. Don’t see many around now. maybe it’s too hot or wet here.

Thanks. Now that I see it I’m sure I saw them in South Africa in gardens (not in Jo’burg, though, but in Durban (sorry, eGoli / eThekwini).

Is that the same as the one we call Christmas Cactus? Which is however, pink.

No, it is not a cactus at all (I see the similarity, though). The Latin name is Pachystachys lutea.

I think the thing we call Christmas cactus isn’t a cactus either!

Oh, but it is. It’s in the cactaceae family. Although we also call it christmas cactus (Weihnachtskaktus) I like the Latin name: Schlumbergia. Sounds like the German last name of Smurfette (Schlumpfine Schlumbergia has a ring to it).
