Two Castles or Three?

My hometown is known as the Zweiburgenstadt, that is the two castle town. Which in German makes perfect sense but is confusing in English since castle can mean Burg or Schloss in German.

The two castles – here shown in winter because they are just so pretty in white – are on the hills above the town. There is the castle ruin Windeck in the centre, about 1000 years old, the Wachenburg just peeping from under the tree, about 100 years old. The tower in front with the beautiful white hat is called Blauer Hut and one of the towers of the medieval town wall.

This is the view from the Windeck in summer and yes – there is another castle, simply called the Weinheimer Schloss.

The tower on the right is the castle tower, the one on the left is the spire of the catholic St. Laurentius church.

You’ve seen one of the three remaining medieval towers above, these are the other two (there used to be four but the fourth one was torn down at the beginning of the last century to make way for increasing traffic).

And now a quick walk to have a look at the castle. It was sold by the last resident count to the town and now serves as the townhall.

When you walk through the small castle garden to the big castle garden you can see the other side of the building, which houses a restaurant.

    1. Living here one sometimes forgets. And then you see the buses of tourists. And on rainy days I pity them. Having come all the way and then end up in a draughty café. And I can go when the weather is nice.
