“I’ve tried to move [ … ] during times of peace and quiet and had the luck of a broken mirror nailed beneath an upside-down horseshoe with a ladder nearby that a black cat just walked under.”
― Karen Marie Moning, Iced
If you want to catch some good luck it is of course important to nail the horseshoe with the open side facing up (or the good luck will drop out, evidently).
Something that was not told to this homeowner, equally evidently.
Personally. I’m not superstitious although – who am I to argue against Niels Bohr, the noted Danish physicist and Nobel Prize recipient:
“A fellow scientist visited Bohr at his home and saw to his amazement that Bohr had fixed a horseshoe over the door for luck. ‘Surely, Niels, you don’t believe in that?’ ‘Of course not,’ Bohr replied. ‘But you see – the thing is that it works whether you believe in it or not.”
― Jonathan Sacks, The Great Partnership

So I keep my black cat away from ladders and myself away from broken mirrors,
and take the advice of George Carlin:
“I noticed that all the prayers I used to offer to God, and all the prayers I now offer to Joe Pesci, are being answered at about the same fifty percent rate. Half the time I get what I want, half the time I don’t…Same as the four-leaf clover and the horseshoe…same as the voodoo lady who tells you your fortune by squeezing the goat’s testicles. It’s all the same…so just pick your superstition, sit back, make a wish, and enjoy yourself…”
― George Carlin

George Carlin was hilarious.

I didn’t know about him when he was still alive. But I am always happy when a youtube clip with him comes across my feed.

I have two of his books: Braindroppings and When Will Jesus Bring the Porkchops. I was so honored when a former supervisor once called me the George Carlin of the office. I had a running commentary on everything that went on there… 🤣

You certainly seem to have the right kind of humour. At least from what I can see in your posts. I’ll be on the lookout for the books.

I always enjoy George Carlin’s humor. I didn’t know about putting a horseshoe the right way up, but y’know it just makes sense! I loved that quote about Neils Bohr, that was clever. Thanks for sharing with WQ this week!

I’m glad you like them. I’ve enjoyed the WQ challenge ever since I found it, finding quotes and illustrating with one of my photos (or the other way round). Thanks for your remarks.
