In South Africa, maize or corn or mealies is called mielies. We eat mielie pap which a basic form of polenta. Often mielies are sold by women who peddle them in the street. They shout “MIELIES!!!” to let people know what they are selling. One of these women has become fairly famous, mainly due to her blood curdling cries:
The love-hate relationship between an English granny, who came from overseas to live with her daughter, and the mielie seller is a sub-story within the cartoon about – surprise – a white madam and her black maid, aka Eve. There is more than a kernel of truth in those cartoons about life in South Africa. Also, I think Mother Anderson uses mielie kernels as her ammunition.

What a yarn!

It’s a great comic strip with political commentary, going strong after 30 years.
