Schau- und Sichtungsgarten Hermannshof

The town of Weinheim is very lucky to have this park right in the centre. It’s a show and trial garden, or a botanical garden that although it is privately owned is open to the public on most days.

It was opened in the 1980s when I was living overseas. As a child my way to school led past the thick hedges and I had no idea what treasures lay behind them.

What is amazing about his little garden – little compared to other botanical gardens but rather large for a private one – is that there is always something to see, even in winter something is flowering. On the one and only day of sunshine we’ve had in November I went for a quick tour and here is what I found:

There are flowers which come out in October and November like the autumn crocus and amarine or the late blooms of the spindle tree, there are colourful leaves, intriguing grey seed heads, and exotic berries like the purple beauty berries.

PS: If you are wondering about the tags: if you type very, very fast and hit enter before the word disappears the tag stays. I didn’t quite manage to type #CosPhoChal – I tried again: I managed without the hash tag.

  1. I have Beauty Berry in my backyard, too. The only thing is it loses its leaves in the winter and, if I didn’t know better, I would think the entire plant was dead. Then spring comes and it leafs out so beautifully.

Try as I might, I could not get the tags to work. Another blogger lost not only her tags, but here entire website. Her theme went away. The horror of that!

  2. Wjat a fabulous garden to have access to every now and then. Lucky you – and great photos. I don’t type fast enough for the WP Tag Minder, it seems, but I do have a Top Tip. Enter the tags via WP on your smart phone. It’s not perfect, but works sometimes at any rate.

    1. 😂 I can type really fast. I learned to type during the early 80s with program where you had to type the words falling from the top. Too many non-typed hits at the bottom and the wall was breached and the aliens (aka the words) won. It was fun at a time when monitor screens were still pretty basic. I honed my around the turn of the century when I was part of a pretty regular chat group and I could participate in three different conversations going on concurrently.
