Telling Names

While rummaging in my archive I came across this photo of a shop that sells books since 1596. The name and the age reminded me of the wand shop in Harry Potter although Olivander’s has been in operation since sometime B.C. but still …

It gave me the idea to look for stores with funny or memorable names. This is an orthopedic shoe store which explains the two disabled parking signs. The name, though, seems strangely unsuitable: Winter Coat.

This flower shop specialising in orchids is called “Flowers – Helper in times of need” (Nothhelfer is apparently the family name). How appropriate to give orchids in times of need.

This used to be a shop but now it’s a children’s daycare. Appropriately named after a fairytale character (Frau Holle is the woman who lives in the clouds and is responsible for snow on earth, when she shakes out her bedding it snows down below, according to the Brothers Grimm). I include it because I know the real Mrs Holle, i.e. she married a Mr Holle, and yes, she must have heard every joke and clever remark about her name.
