When I was little I wanted to become a university student.
I was growing up near Heidelberg, home of the oldest university in Germany, and I found the atmosphere of the old part of town exhilarating (minus the throng of tourists, of course). I didn’t really know what to study as long as I would be at a university.

A few years later with my interests more focussed I settled on Theaterwissenschaft (Drama, in the anglosaxon world, but without any practical content) and became a student at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.

I had plans of going abroad for one or two semesters to experience the anglosaxon approach to theatre. But then life intervened and I got my wishes in an unexpected way. It wasn’t the UK or the US but it was English speaking (and very much English rather than American influenced) and I started to study Drama (and German literature) at Wits, the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Interesting to learn something of your history.

I was wondering a) if I should share and b) if anybody would even be interested. So – thanks.

That was a different turn. A lucky chance to meet your husband?

It’s a longer story. Lucky, definitely. Whirlwind, yes. But it wasn’t quite as accidental.
