Jack Be Nimble

Jack be quick. Jack jump over the candlestick.

A tortoise doesn’t really seem the right posterboy for nimbleness. However, our boys had a pet tortoise when we lived in Zimbabwe, called Jack. His fullname was Jack, the Ripper – due to the way he would demolish a lettuce leaf when he was hungry. And we often encouraged him to move a bit quicker with the nursery rhyme. Maybe too often because he became very nimble and disappeared out of our garden surrounded by high brick walls and full wooden gates.

The winter before Jack had hibernated in a heap of leaves, slowly turning into compost (the leaves, not Jack). We checked all possible hiding places over and over again but he definitely had left the building garden. Maybe he did jump?

    1. Maybe Jack was just a restless soul. He came like that to the children’s nursery school. They actually had three tortoises who had just turned up one day (not the same day). Since they are indigenous to Zimbabwe we were never sure whether Jack was truly a pet. In any case, there was no fear that he would not be able to survive.
