“Der Mond ist aufgegangen” is one of the best known poems in German literature not least because most people know it mainly as a song. The poem by Matthias Claudius, published in 1783, is one of the most lyrical poems I know.

The moon is risen, beaming,
The golden stars are gleaming
So brightly in the skies;
The hushed, black woods are dreaming,
The mists, like phantoms seeming,
From meadows magically rise.
The translation is by Margarete Münsterberg and the full text can be found on wikipedia in case somebody is interested.

Lyrical poetry–my new favorite kind of poetry. Lovely.
