I’ve just checked up a bit. We have red squirrels in Germany and their reddish-brown colour was one reason they were associated with the devil from early middle ages. The other reason is that their ears have those little tufts looking somewhat like horns – which is, I suppose why they are called oak-hornlets = Eichhƶrnchen.

It was probably an attempt to get away from the creek at the bottom of the plot. But it looked weird enough to catch my eye.

That’s a good saying. In Australia we would substitute squirrel for possum. They can be the devil incarnate
