This is the Hexenturm, the witches’ tower, in our town. Today it’s surrounded by residential buildings. People assume it was a prison for witches, possibly before they were burned at the stake.
The facts: This was never a prison. It was part of the town wall. We do have another tower which actually was used as a prison but there are no records of any witches ever burned or even imprisoned in our town. It is just a name and nobody really knows where it came from.

I just love the preservation of history. Especially the architecture. Over here, we knock it down and start again.

We are still clutching onto that “New World” farce with both claws! Sad period in history to be an American I fear.

It doesn’t always work. We have 3 towers left over from the middle ages. But there was a forth one, erected as a gate in 1608 and torn down in 1882 – because traffic was increasing (still horse drawn, of course) and it was considered too narrow, The other three towers were never used as gates.

Presumably you can’t see inside….

It’s not open to the public (too dangerous) but if there were any skeletons (literally and figuratively) they have been removed a long time ago. There are – so I’m told – no cells or anything of the kind inside. Since the records about the actual prison tower are pretty well preserverd I think they would have mentioned a witch or two.
