I spent a day in Duisburg (Germany) last week. When we arrived in the middle of the night we were greeted by this neon green … structure. Of course, I went out to take a photo next morning. And then I had to research what I had been looking at. It’s the Stadtwerketurm (municipal utility tower) and considered one of the landmarks of the city. It was erected in the 1960s but I don’t know if it was neon green like that then.
Anyway, that’s were my word “tower” was inspired.
This utilitarian tower – one of the tv towers in the Taunus, northwest of Frankfurt.
An industrial tower. This is the old malthouse tower, chimney I guess, in Schwetzingen.
This tower – the watertower in Mannheim – combines utilitarian purpose (it was and is a working water tower responsible to supply pressure to the town’s water system) with being a landmark because of the architecture and the surrounding little park – all that right smack in the centre of the city.
The Blauer Hut (blue hat) with a white cap in this photo is retired but in it’s time it was part of the town fortification of Weinheim.
Same town, different tower, several hundred years older – the tower of the castle ruin Windeck in Weinheim. It was built by the Lorsch abbey (the one of UNESCO heritage site fame, about 20 km to the northwest) to collect tribute (or taxes).

Great choice of a word for the challenge, and photographed well! That Mannheim water tower is beautiful, and my pick for the most artistic.

It’s not only a landmark it is also a way to find your bearings in Mannheim – the inner city being laid out on a grid with the main street crossing the grid in the middle leading from the palace and the street crossing it at a right angle leading from the water tower.
