In the 12th century, when Barbarossa was the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire he built a Palace in Kaiserslautern. He had eleven children from his second marriage, and at least one illegitimate daughter. But the people of Kaiserslautern know better: he had many, many illegitimate children and he passed on his red beard to all his male descendants. To this day, the men of Kaiserslautern check for red strands in their beards – a sure sign that they are the progeny of the great emperor.
No need to mention that my husband is a native of Kaiserslautern and yes, before it turned white he had a fair share of red hairs in his beard. No need to mention but I did anyway.

I won’t mention, either, that before my beard turned white, it, too, had many red hairs in it. Of course, my family hailed from Ukraine and Russia back in the day, but you never know, right?

When my husband once grew a beard (happily, before I knew him) he was astonished to find it was red – he’s got (had) fair hair. Now we know why.

😁 My husband shaved off his beard of forty years when the meds for his high blood pressure made him itch. I hate his face beardless. In the beginning I used to cut his beard (he liked it short cropped). 😞

I met my husband with beard. When we were about 15 years married he shaved his beard off on a whim during holidays. I refused to let him touch me until the beard grew back. I was a good girl (still am) and wouldn’t fool around with a stranger.
