The Mettle of the Metal

When Siegfried was young he came to Mime, the smith, as an apprentice and forged himself a sword, which could cut through the hardest iron. The sword’s name was Balmung.

This sculpture by Jens Nettlich shows Siegfried testing his sword. It is part of a series of 14 sculptures depicting scenes from the legend of the Nibelungs found along the road of the Nibelungs in the Odenwald, this one is in Reichelsheim.

Sculpture made of metal about a guy forging metal into a sword capable of cutting through metal. Now that’s metalwork.

    1. From Worms to the Odenwald, it’s all about the Nibelungs around that area. There are, I think, 23 wells or springs where Siegfried was supposedly murdered by Hagen. And all that without a fat lady singing. 😉

  1. Oh, you are coloring outside the lines again, with a five word title instead of one. What am I to do? Lol. I keep thinking that it looks like Siegfried, like Red Bull, has wings.
