We Warned Them!

Yesterday was night of the Lärmfeuer – around the Odenwald bonfires are lit to commemorate a method of communication of old. It is said that villages warned each other of comming danger by lighting fires on hilltops – you’ve seen Lord of the Rings and you know about the beacons which were lit to call the Rhohirrim to the aide of Gondor. It is actually debated whether that method was actually used in the Middle Ages but today it is a fun night. Some villages that participate light high bonfires in the middle of a meadow, others like Lindenfels, where we were this year, light fires around the ruin of the Lindenfels castle. The major fire is a proper bonfire although not quite as big as others because people can get close up. Anyway, the purpose today is a bit of fun and of course, food and drink on the side line.

These photos were taken by our grandson with my cellphone.

Grandma was in the picture, leading the way.

But he saw a devil in the crowd (aka his dad).
