There are two ways in Germany to celebrate May Day. It is a public holiday and the workers’ unions have large demonstrations in many cities. In our town, unfortunately, the right wing extremists have decided to march but there is a counter demonstration as well.
The sculpture is of a worker at the Kennedy bridge in Strassbourg, erected in about 1906.

The other way is to “hike into May”. Groups of hikers start a their trail on the evening of 30 April and keep walking through the night, usually ending in a outdoor breakfast. I’ve done this in my youth and it is actually a glorious experience.

Well, I got up at 4. 30 today to enjoy the experience of walking at daybreak. Does that count?

What were you drinking? It only counts if alcohol is involved, while walking or at least just after. A glass of bubbly or a mimosa will do. 😉

Oh urgh no, not alcohol at that hour! Orange juice before leaving the house, strong black coffee after. Will that do?

If you’re happy with it it’s fine. But after a whole night’s hike coffee just won’t do it.
