the smaller the ferry.

Both these ferries cross the Rhine, they are about 25km apart in Gernsheim and in Nierstein. There are, of course, bridges over the Rhine but if the distance between the two nearest bridges is 60km the car driver (and even more so the cyclist) are very happy for a ferry or two in between.

This smaller ferry crosses the Neckar between Ladenburg and Neckarhausen just over 10km from where the Neckar flows into the Rhine. It’s maximum capacity is less than 10 cars and it’s always a highlight on an outing by bicycle, particularly for children. There are bridges nearby.

This quaint little ferry with a proper young and strapping ferryman crosses the Nahe near Bad Kreuznach. It is of no value to the infrastructure but much in demand by Sunday afternoon strollers and serious hikers.

What fun! Such ferries are very ususual in the UK.

Hmm. There are at least 2 rivers in my general locality whch are extremely deficient in bridges.

It’s annoying if you have to drive long detours because of a lack of bridges.

Those look like nice rides. For a long time in our area, the bridges that allowed pedestrians and bikes to cross were few and far between. I could have used a ferry more than once.
