I was hiking on my own in southern France. I wanted to walk up to the Tour de la Massane above Argelès-sur-Mer near Perpignan. I passed one farmhouse with two dogs trying to block my way and I passed them, feeling very uneasy doing so. About a kilometre further on, the road led past another farmhouse and this time it was four dogs that barricaded the my way. I didn’t dare to go back (because of the two I had already met) so I kept walking and the old guys were hanging back but the black one kept getting closer. I decided not to chance it and took the next turn back down towards where I had parked the car. He was friendly enough but followed me all the way back to my car, I guess he wanted to make sure that I really left.

It sounds like you handled a tricky situation wisely! Farm dogs can be territorial, and it’s always better to trust your instincts when feeling uneasy. The black one escorting you back was likely doing its job—making sure you left their turf. Better a peaceful retreat than a risky confrontation. Maybe next time, consider a different route or check locally for advice on dog encounters. Happy (and safe) hiking! 🚶♂️🐕

Yes, but … this was the official hiking route up to the tower. Normally it can be driven by car but because of fire hazard is was blocked for non-residents. I didn’t meet other hikers but on my way back I met a number of mountain bikers going up. I don’t know how they negotiated the dogs.

Not a dog fan when they behave like that. You did the right thing.

I found it very disconcerting that they were left to roam like that. But also very French.

That would have been a concerning incident. Well handled Elke. The cyclists may have had a bit of trouble I reckon

I think so, too. Since it was steep they would not have been able to avoid all of the dogs. They were clever and two tried to cut me off by going above the path.

They really acted like sheep dogs as well as guard dogs
