Mannheim is sometimes referred to as “Dreckstadt”(the sprayer couldn’t spell properly) meaning “Dirttown” or possibly, “Cruddington”. Regardless of the spelling, the sprayer added to the name.
This stems partly from less than beautiful areas (which can be found in any major town or city, to be honest) but also from a confectionary speciality of Mannheim called Monnemer Dreck – crud of Mannheim, a macaroon like biscuit (British English).

It’s not better in German, either. But Mannheim people are not to be ironically selfdeprecating. The story behind it is that a ruler in Mannheim forbade the locals to put their night soil in buckets in front of their houses (to be collected, I suppose). And an enterprising confectioner ran with the idea. Doesn’t make the name much better.
