I had planned a different free Monochrome Madness but when I saw Leanne’s rock I thought I try the same with my home. Since the quarry of my hometown is not even half as recognisable as Uluru I thought I’d better add the original colour photos. The stone quarried here is quartz porphyry, a yellowish stone which shows up well against the surrounding dark woods. The quarry can be seen from far like an ugly scar in the hills although to me the view always spelled home never having known it without the naked rock.

Although the contrast of the light rock and the dark trees works well in black and white I think I prefer the colour photos, particularly when it is close to sunset which gives it a golden glow.

But those last two photos are clearly a lion’s face–in black and white or color! 🦁

I hadn’t seen that but you’re right. The lion of Weinheim, sigh!

I don’t think every image is suitable for monochrome and I think you have shown that here Elke, great idea.
