This is the fundament of the Haselburg near Höchst im Odenwald. For years, the locals took stones for their own houses from this ancient Roman villa. The realisation that it was in fact an ancient site dating back to the 2nd century C.E. came relatively early, around 1829. It took a while until it was properly excavated and protected. The original inhabitants were somewhere on a trading route yet still deep into then unknown country, building on the foundation of the Roman Empire.
