of the Schwetzingen Palace Gardens isn’t properly red despite of its name; it’s not even a proper mosque if it comes to that. It was built in the mid to late 18th century when all things oriental were the heigt of fashion. In other words, it’s a really large folly.

So not a red mosque, but it does have a bit of a red freeze at the top, and looks like red around the windows

It’s built of red sandstone (aka pink). It’s quite an extraordinary building. Lots of “oriental” details, including “Arabic” wisdoms, in Arabic writing and translated,, and deco elements which were definitely influenced by Arabic designs. It was never meant to be a house of worship. During world war II it became a hospital for a while, more for recuperating soldiers. After world war II it became an officers’ mess with nightclub tendencies. Then it was used for a while as a real place of worship until a proper mosque could be built in town. And now it is a tourist attraction but Arab and Turkish wedding parties use it as backdrop for their wedding photographs.

I guess you have Muslim citizens locally now. Has any move been made to have it as a place of worship?

No, not after that short stint. It’s just too fake from a Muslim point of view. It would not do at all. (and there are mosques around, more than enough if you hear some Germans talk).
