Arrow slots or crenels are ususally vertical slits in thick walls in medieval buildings. Archers could shoot on possible attackers through them without exposing themselves unnecessarily. This is Castle Wildenstein, in the southern parts of the Black Forest. They decided to go horizontally if these are indeed meant to be arrow slits.
In my view they look like giant mail slots.

If they are arrow slots, then there’s room for more than one archer

Depends on how wide the slot is. When I have fired an arrow, the arrow is almost eye level

True, I didn’t see the slots/slits from the inside.

I am reading everything medieval right now, so this is right on time! Did someone actually paint this white- or is it a specific kind of stone I am not familiar with?

I think it’s whitewashed. If you want to know more about Burg Wildenstein, here is the English wikipedia site: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildenstein_Castle_(Leibertingen) If you click on the German language version you will see an engraving from the 17th century – not realistic but it shows what impression the fortress must have had on contemporaries. It was unassailable, from its position and because it could only reached via a very high bridge.
