The villa rustica near Großsachsen

The excavations of this villa rustica in the vicinity of Heidelberg only began in the 1980s. What was discovered was a rather imposing Roman villa from the 2nd and 3rd century CE. At the time it was close to Lopodunum (today: Ladenburg) which had been granted civitas status by the Roman emperor Trajan and was one of the Roman major settlements in Germany at the time (a small, comfortable town today).

The two Lombardy poplars planted when the foundation were completely uncovered are now over 40 years old and guide visitors to the historic spot.
