This is an Ampelmännchen, the figure for the offical traffic light in Germany telling pedestrians to stop. It was the sign on traffic lights in East Germany, the then German Democratic Republic, When the two Germanies unified in 1990 many East Germans were disgruntled because it wasn’t so much a unification but a takeover by the west. Very few things from the GDR were kept when the five eastern states joined the Federal German Republic. It took a citizens’ action group to safe the eastern Ampelmännchen and new traffic lights were fitted with this symbol. The old lights looked like this and can still be seen on many crossings which have old lights.

Today, the Ampelmännchen has become the symbol of a complicated relationship: the most visible thing that was kept from the east, visible and really inconsequential.

In the greater scheme of things … I’d preferred if we learned more about women’s emancipation from the other side, or something like that. Of course, other things (like the official blatant disregard of the environment etc.) I’m quite happy to do without.

3-D is so much more effective, IMO. Thanks for the share.

I love it, I’m not surprised that people wanted to keep it. Thank you, Elke and thank you for taking part in the challenge.

Interesting, the things most of us haven’t had to deal with.

I didn’t either, really. I lived abroad during that time.
