This is one of the three towers still standing of our original medieval town wall. I’ve grown up with it as my parents’ property is on the other side of it. It looked like that to me for over 50 years and possibly for a few hundreds of years. A nice, weathered, old look.
Then this happened:
Apparently the structural integrity of the tower was threatened, it had become unsafe.
This is the new look. I can’t say I like it very much but I understand the reasons why it had to be done.

I agree. Just stabilise the tower without getting out the high pressure hoses.

I don’t think they used those. They put stuff on, like cement (or something similar).

A coating of some sort of representative but they would have washed the hundreds of years of gunk off first

I have to agree. I wonder how many years it will take to age again.

Either I’ve gotten used to it (the repairs were done five years ago) or it has already kind of mellowed. But I am too old to see it again as it was before.

Yes, I agree. But apparently it was that or no tower left.

I am just so thankful they preserved it. Here they tear everything down.

I guess it is a difference if you tear something down that’s 100 years old or 700, (but then again, if you tear down the 100 year-olds you never get any 700 year olds)

Centuries, please. It’s around 700 years old.

Well, that is a shame. It had so much character before. My birthplace in Germany also has a medieval wall around it and a few towers like that.

The is an impressive structure. I have to agree, that I like the appearance of the original version versus the restored one.

I’m glad you like my old friend. Family lore has it that my father climbed up the side once and abseiled down to rescue my grandma’s cat.
