A permanent market selling vittels

This is the Viktualienmarkt in the centre of Munich, open everyday and dedicated to mainly food and also flowers. If you ever pull an all-nighter in the city, this is the place to go for a very early breakfast because the establishments around this square open before sunrise to cater for the workers bringing in all the fresh fruits and vegetables and other consumables for the market.

And all of this presided over by The Great Cauliflower.

Probably a brother of The Great Pumpkin of Peanuts fame.

  1. What a delightful glimpse into the vibrant, early-morning heartbeat of Munich! There’s something truly special about a place that hums with purpose before the rest of the world has even stirred. The Viktualienmarkt isn’t just a market; it’s a testament to the city’s rhythm and soul.

How wonderful that this centuries-old square transforms in those quiet, pre-dawn hours into a haven for night owls and early birds alike. The idea of sharing a warm breakfast with the very workers who are bringing the day’s freshness to life is beautiful. It’s a genuine, behind-the-scenes moment where you can truly taste the city’s authenticity along with your coffee and Weisswurst.

Thank you for sharing this perfect tip. It captures the magic of travel—finding those hidden, living moments where you don’t just visit a place, but you briefly become part of its daily story.

    1. It sounds like you’ve been there! I used the pre-breakfast offer during my days as a student at Munich university but whenever I visited Munich since then I haven’t been (I’m too old to pull one-nighters now and too set in my ways, i.e. I don’t do mornings anymore).
