This building is on the site of the “Hessische Rebmuttergarten” (aka the mamma of vines in Hesse) where in 1927 the vines resistant to the grape phylloxera were developed. This vine fretter was a pest, which came from the Americas to Europe and was set to destroy the European wine growing industry until it was discovered that American vine varieties were resistant to the pest in the lower part of the plant (aka the roots) and the European varieties were resistant in the upper part. European vines were then grafted on American roots and vines as we know them today were saved.

Two nice sets of shuttered windows under the crest of the State of Hesse embellish the building today.
