The rules for bulk waste differ from area to area in Germany but one thing they have all in common whether there are certain collection dates for everybody, usually twice a year, or whether you have to make an individualised date – the mountain of junk grows within minutes of the first old chair appearing.

We have cleanup like this once a year–a different neighborhood each month. The stuff some people not only accumulate but also throw away! 😬

They used to have a junk collection day in town but people would start weeks in advance and the streets looked a shocker. Now they can request for a council pick up

People are so consumed with buying stuff they don’t need which irrevocably becomes junk. I’m in the process of sorting this out in my life because I don’t want my junk to become my children’s nightmare…I have that with my own mother’s lifelong ‘treasures’.

I hear you. I have five sets of crockery. Two nherited from my mother (her 1950s set, her “modern” set), the remnants of our South African set (a wedding present), a full fondue set (a present from my mum, used once a year), MINE (the first one I ever selected myself because I liked it). And like everybody various bits and pieces from heaven knows where. For various reasons I am keeping them – for now. It’s ridiculous.

We were talking about junk, then I see you lived in South Africa. This caught my attention. I lived there from age 7 to age 22. I also got married over there.

I met this German guy who worked in South Africa. Within less than two months I had followed him to S.A. (I was 20, one does stupid impulsive stuff when one is 20) and we got married so I could get permanent residence status. We joked on the day that divorce was fairly cheap and easy in South Africa. Well, the joke was on us, here we are – 46 years later. We lived another 15 years in SA, then moved around a bit and have been back in Germany for quite a while now. Where did you live? We lived – almost predictably – in Johannesburg, Gauteng.

I met an Australian who was working there. Ten days after we met, he asked me to marry him. I was also 20. Oh, the rashness of youth! Lived mainly in Witbank and also near Kimberley when married but my dad was in mining so moved around a lot as a kid. We moved to Australia in 1988 and still going strong. Not so rash after all 😊
