It has to do with the petals, apparently. The two side petals are the “daughters”, the two top petals the stepdaughters, and the lower wide petal is known as the stepmother. That explains the whole name but why the petals are called this I wouldn’t know. The English name pansy btw comes from the French pensée – because it is considered the flower of remembrance.
