A marriage of more than convenience

Schloss Stolzenfels was built as a summer residence for a prince royal (aka: a king in waiting) and his wife. Wilhelm IV had become King of Prussia when he and his wife, Elisabeth Ludovica of Bavaria, moved in. The castle was built on ruins and signified tradition, Romantic longing for the Rhine, and the union of Bavaria and Prussia (which shows in many crests and images throughout the castle).

The marriage is said to have been a good one which shows in the layout of the upper story of the castle. It’s built in a U-form, starting with the queen’s reception room, the queen’s study, the bedroom of the royal couple, the king’s dressing room, a guest room. [as an aside: I found it fascinating that the king had a dressing room and the queen a study]

It’s not allowed to take photos of the inside, so here are the windows:

That’s the queen’s study and the smaller window the connection to the bedroom.

This middle section are the windows of the royal bedroom. I found it charming that the bed was a relatively narrow queen size bed, not a bed for a couple with problems.

This three-panelled bay window belongs to the king’s dressing room.

This style is kept throughout the building,
