Now let’s look at sports. The good news first: If you are the one with the camera in hand you don’t have to do any sport yourself! I’ve not only tried to assemble a variety of sports in the following post but also different approaches to action and movement.

Sports photography is a great way to show action. I’ll start off with a photo that I haven’t taken myself. I think it was probably taken before I was even born or just around that time. It’s a picture of my father and doesn’t he look great?!

Snow in general is perfect for monochrome photography. The photo below was taken by me but it is a naturally monochrome photograph, i.e. it’s a colour photo that turned out black and white.

Incidentally, this skier is related to the first one. And this time, I took the picture.

It’s still a sports photo although the place and particularly the backdrop take the attention from the action itself.

If you’re not into action at allf, consider a “frozen” action shot like this sculpture of a football player or even some football club graffitiy. It’s still sports.

And talking about football – it doesn’t have to be a big match. A father and son training session will do. Or a father teaching his daughter how to skate.

Having said that big matches offer great opportunities. Below are photos of world rugby union championship match. It is challenging taking photos from far away and far above but even a fairly moderate zoom lens can give good results. The contrast in the different jerseys makes for good monochrome pictures – remember when TVs only came in black & white? They used to pick the jerseys for contrasts then and often they still do.

I included the last photo of a scrum to show my favourite rugby player. Not a South African, but the then Scottish captain Greig Laidlaw. He is the guy standing on the right.

This was a female rugby match between a Frankfurt/Wiesbaden team against a team from Cologne. Women’s rugby in Germany is a niche sport which creates the opportunity to get a lot closer to the action.

Not quite a team sport but unless you are frontrunner you’ll never run alone. And standing on the side of the road waiting for the one runner you know can get very boring – unless you brought a camera.

If you still don’t think you want to get close to some action, you can show some sports’ architecture, too. This is Newcastle United’s football stadium, incidentally smack bang in the middle of town.

    1. I usually only get on the pc when Leanne has done her thing I wanted to schedule the post around that time. But it was late and last night I was sooooo tired and one click too far and I had published immediatly. And I couldn’t be bothered to take it down and then redo it.

  2. Excellent photos – especially the one you didn’t take yourself 😉. I don’t get to tak sporty photos, since I never watch it. My dislike of games lessons at school was so profound even watching threatens to bring me out in a rash.

    1. Just interpret it veeeeery widely. Chess and checkers are sports. Or pushing a child on a swing is either sport or it is beinger a trainer. I hear that they consider competitive hairdressing a sport …

    1. Yes, it’s a great photo. And until a few years ago we didn’t even know it existed. I was displayed in the local museum to illlustrate the anniversary of the local skiing club.
