
At this time of the year there are still rape seed fields, but also very similar looking yellow wild mustard seed fields. Both are grown for their oil. But amongst all the yellow there are lilac phacelia fields. Or a mixture all of all of the above.
Phacelia is not a cash crop but grown because it gives the soil a breather and even healing time between crops. It’s apparently good for bees (bees seem to appreciate them according to my photos) and rather not so good for snails (they stay away). Besides looking beautiful – their German common name translates as something like beautiful cluster – they also have an enticing smell.

That phacelia is lovely, much preferable to the nasty yellow rape seed, which gives me terrible hayfever
