The Jug of Local Fame

Monochrome Madness is hosted by Brian from Bushboy’s blog this week. He suggested we show you some jugs. You can link to Brian’s site or to Leanne’s Monochrome Madness site.

Beer gardens are the standard but around Frankfurt there are garden pubs that serve no beer at all but only the local version of cider. This Äbbelwoi is traditionally served in 1, 2 or 5 litre jugs (with glasses for sharing) made of stoneware. They are called Bembel. They have a salt based lacquer which makes them grey with greyish-blue decorations. The traditional decorations is a distinctive look that’s easily recognised.

These are the special bembel made for the Frankfurt Hash House Harriers as farewell gifts to Hashers who move away.

Although technically not jugs these pots are made in the same style. They used to be kitchen items but these days are mostly seen as flower pots.

The decorations are easily recognised and nowadays also used on caps and shirts, worn by tourists and local patriots.

But real afficionados keep their bembel close to their heart.

  1. Something is going on with WP and I cannot pull up Brian’s post. I click on it and get a notice from WP about ” a Glitch has occurred.” Hopefully, they fix it quickly.

      1. I just tried now, too, and it worked. Must have been a short outage on WP’s part. The link didn’t work before but now it does. Maybe WP needed a nap, too. Thanks for trying, Elke!

      1. Well, I take it back. I can get to Brian’s site from your pingback, but cannot get to it from the email, which is how I read blogs. I get a notification that there is a CLI Glitch. Whatever that is….
