Great quotes. Our local caterpillar-destroyers are the pheasants, imported in unimaginably large numbers so that they can be shot in unimaginably large numbers (too many to enter the food chain) by people prepared to pay unimaginable sums for the ‘privilege’ of doing so.

We have pheasants, too. Also imported for hunting and they liked it. But they are not here in abundance but it is rather seldom and a treat when I see one or a pair in the wild. Usually, if I’m lucky, one every year.

Lucky you. Honestly, we are completely overrun with pheasants round here, and the problem gets worse every year. Once shooting starts on the so-called ‘Glorious Twelfth’ (of August) you will commonly find heaps of dead pheasants stacked in insalubrious corners. They’ve just been shot for ‘sport’, and have no further use.

How sad. They are so rare here that I was quite amazed when I found out that they were imported for “sport”.
