Don’t get me started

The only reason why you are not seeing 50+ socks in this post is because I’ve shown most of my sock pics before. These here are all new (but I meet the same people or the same socks on different occasions):

Not all socks are long socks but an eagle in German colours with a beer bottle in his hands … wings … claws …? tells you all you need to know. These are socks that were given out at a German Nash Hash. We are known mainly as beer drinkers but do not discriminate against other beverages i.e. vino, bourbon, tequila. Although we do drink it, I’ve yet to see somebody with “water” written on their socks. New trends have not passed us by, some people prefer to smoke rather than drink, socks can accommodate that taste, too, and at the same time confirm the (false) cliché about Hashers (hint: the name stems from hash browns, not from weed).

I hope you like my collection of hashers’ socks (Hash House Harriers, the internet will help you out). I’m usually behind somebody wearing the white socks on the bottom right.

  1. It’s an expensive business being a hasher. All those socks! And I’m surprised that any of you smoke. I honestly can’t think of anyone I know who still smokes, and you rarely ever witness smoking anywhere these days (Vaping however is another matter. Also yuk)

    1. I’ve never smoked. I was tempted to use the shisha in Saudi and I abstained with heavy heart because I wanted to be a good example for my sons. They ended up being chain smokers, both of them. So much for that idea! — But smoking weed is different, isn’t it? I mean I don’t but if one does it is one joint a day, if that. Not everybody loves gummies.

      1. In my first semester at uni I went to my first party and we were sitting in a circle and a “cigarette” made its round. My thought: “This is nice, very inclusive. … But can’t they afford cigarettes of their own.” Next round I was excluded because I wasn’t inhaling and hence the active ingredient was wasted on me. Next day I went out and taught myself. One packet a day until I got it. — Then I met my husband who told me that if I ever started to smoke he would consider that a reason for divorce (because his eyes reacted VERY badly to smoke, in the company of active smokers he looked like Christopher Lee playing Dracula). And that was it.

      2. I don’t think I would have become a smoker anyway. After my one packet on one day I bought myself a pipe (because it was cool sitting in a lecture hall and smoking pipe and also I liked the smell). Then I got a cold and had to stop. When I was better and took the pipe again everything in my body rebelled. So that was that. But shisha was tempting.

      3. In my post grad year, four students (all male!) and one of our lecturers puffed away on pipes constantly. It was hell in a small seminar room. So I really can’t tolerate pipe smoke at any level.

    2. Not so expensive, you just need to find one or possibly two pairs you really like. And when you go for a weekend (i.e. a Nash aka national hash) you usually come back with loads of haberdashery. I have so many hash T-Shirt that I often give them away to virgins, i.e. newbies. Actually, there are a few haberdashers that sell donated hash gear second hand and the proceeds go to charity. Newbies need to wear at least on piece of clothing identified as hash gear or they have to drink for it!

      1. Also, if you’re really cheap (or poor) you get one pair of socks and you switch with somebody else. It’s not uncommon for hashers to wear two left socks. 😁
