  1. We are getting better with stopping smoking
“Daily smoking rates among Australians (aged 14 and over) dropped to a historic low of 5.6%, down from 8.3% in 2022–2023.”

    1. Apparently, about 20% of Germans smoke regularly (although the statistic does not say whether that’s one pack a day or one smoke a week). That’s less than a few years ago but still 20% too many, in my opinion.

  2. it’s funny that just last week I was fascinated by the cigarette butts that had made their way under the drainage grills at a train station platform, and wondered if someone has the task of cleaning those up and how they would do it..ah the thoughts one gets when waiting for the train!

  3. Agreed Elke. I’ve just looked up UK figures: just over 10%. While that may be lots better than it used to be, a similar number vape, and I find this an equally disgusting habit – it’s even worse being near a vaper in a public space than a smoker – you just get enveloped in the smog. Just think how much money we’ve saved by never smoking!

  4. I agree with all your choices, Elke, and I thank you for taking part in the Dislike challenge.

I stopped smoking fifty years ago, way before the health campaigns. On my second attempt, my friend decided to help. You smell terrible, your house stinks, and so do your children.

I was horrified. The thought that my two small toddlers stank of cigarettes upset me more than anything else. I never touched another packet and will always be grateful for her truthfulness.
