Childhood Stories

Odysseus was always my hero as a girl. I wanted to be Telemachos, his son. A little bit I wanted to be Nausicaa but I really was too young to understand what was happening in this part of the story.

On our holiday in Greece or rather in Crete to be more precise we took a boat ride around the bay of Souda and I came face to face with my childhood stories.

These beauties are said to be the petrified sirens who tried to lure Odysseus and his crew to their certain doom.

Our guide pointed out that Mikis Theodorakis, the great Greek composer (remember Zorba the Greek?) and political activist, was born on that coastline. He didn’t mention it but maybe the sirens sang at his birth and during his childhood and that influenced his talent. Who knows?
