I haven’t found any uglier corners here in Ludwigshafen than in other cities in Germany. This is the view from the Berliner Platz, the public transport hub with busses, trams, and trains intersecting towards the church St. Ludwig. It’s been edited with the Meta AI “paper” filter.

I think the combination of money and no money. It was hard hit during the second world war due to the even now largest chemical company in the world (BASF), hence it was a target. About 80% of the city was destroyed. Rebuilding after the war was fast and functional (read: ugly). To this day Ludwigshafen has a high proportion of industrial workers , and BASF does what many companies do: pay their taxes elsewhere. So ugly and functional has stayed.

We have towns like that too. It’s hard for them to rise above all that.
