Windows

I find windows fascinating and enjoy taking pictures of them.

They can show off with their forms, or ornaments, or colours, or all of the above.

Yet others like to hide:

Don’t you think that the ones on the right look as if they are peaking out from under the roof like a cat would from under a bedspread?

Still others deceive the onlooker:

The splendid frame around this is trompe l’oeil – painted on the wall but the window is real enough.

They often come in pairs:

which offers opportunities to play around with symmetry – or not.

Mein Weinheimer Dreigestirn

52-16-christmas

I think Christmas times in South Africa have spoilt me for years to come: I rather have hot weather, sunshine, braai vleis, and lazing around the swimming pool than the North and Middle European variety.  But for what it’s worth I was happy to receive one of these little wooden figures each year as a present from my home town, and they have been part of our Christmas decorations every since.

01

Starting off with some old rusty signs – I found them in Brandenburg, about 100 kms from Berlin.

05

The things drivers have to watch out for!  Don’t disturb frogs and don’t squash elderly people, or vice versa.

02

I think in this case I like the German town better than the French one although the car number plate is from the town of “Babe”.  Go figure.

03

This two signs were just … well strange. The one on the left reads in Palatian dialect: “There, look upwards!” I remember that it pointed to a piece of wooden art in the branches of a tree. And the one on the right is one in a series of signs that mark a path – but I have no idea what the creature is supposed to signify.

The same message in two different countries.

04

And finally, these are the two happiest signs in my collection.  Playgrounds.  For adults and even for kids.  The sign in German reads: “Playing  welcome! Laughing and romping around by children and adults is allowed! The director.”
