Smoking Is no Longer in Fashion

The last tobacco grower in our area gave up in 2010. Many of the barns in which the tobacco leaves were dried can still be seen. Because they have open wooden walls they cannot be used for anything else as they stand. So while they are not really abandoned, they are empty and vacated.

Often the structures below the drying areas are still in use, for storage and the like.

Not a tobacco barn but still a barn that is no longer in use. It has started to look abandoned even though it is attached to a kind of grange.

The Ear Apparent

When I last visited the sculpture of Reineke Fuchs, he had ears. A bit large for fox ears but definitely ears. A local guide told us that the ears had been ripped off a number of times and everytime they were fixed they were a bit bigger than before.

This photo is from yesterday. It’s apparent that ear breakers have been at it again. For the life of me, I don’t know what motivates somebody to such vandalism.

Vogelstang Lake

The lake is wedged between two suburbs of Mannheim, Vogelstang and Wallstadt. From the northern side the watertower of Wallstadt rises above the stretch of beach.

From the opposite site the highrise apartment building of Vogelstang are visible.

BTW: The sign just visible says: swimming allowed, boats and stand up paddling not allowed.

Murder! She Snapped

When I took the first photo I was wondering why the bee was not flying away and I thought the pollen basket looked kind of dry but I was in a hurry. I saw the white thing on the lavender bloom and quickly dismissed it as part of a white blossom. But now that I’m looking at it on the much bigger computer screen and – well you see it, too, don’t you? It was murder! The bee is dead. It is a dead bee. The bee has passed on. The bee is no more. It has ceased to be. It is an ex-bee!

In honour of this bee who has shaken off the mortal coil I show the photo without any editing except for a bit of cropping.

And now for the edited photos. Purple is opposite to green on the colour circle – so I thought I play around a bit with the negative tool.

School Windows

These are windows of the Feudenheimschule in a district of Mannheim. Many schools were built in the first twenty years of the last century, and it shows in the style. Also, in our area of the country sandstone is an often used building material. This particular school was finished in 1913.

The detail in the top left photo is part of the crest of Mannheim, a wolf’s hook – a tool used to catch wolves and foxes in former times.
