Loud in Front of a Crowd

I’ve talked a few times about our weekend running & walking activity. Yet, the athletic (ha!) part of our weekend shenanigans is only half of the attraction. The other half is the actual shenanigans. After the run we have something to drink (traditionally, this was beer but times have changed and now there is also near-beer, shanty, wine, or water), some snacks and lots of laughter. To help with the latter we stand around in a circle and under the guidance of one loudmouthed individual we make fun of each other, sing bawdy songs and quaff more liquid.

The job of the emcee is not an easy one: he or she has to come up with witticisms and jokes and gags, based on actual or invented situations, be quick with a repartee and chose a fitting song before turning on his or her next victim. For these actions the emcee is feared and revered. A few years back, somebody “south parked” me in the middle of the circle:

Was It Worth the Ink?

Once upon a time I took a course in calligraphy. I never liked just copying clever quotes, I would rather use my own texts. I never got very good, I should have practiced more but then computers with fancy scripts became affordable and for me the skill became obsolete. But I kept a few of my favourite limericks including the odd ink stain.
